The Website

From the best that I can tell, the St. Andrew Youth website was launched around January 2006. Since that time, it has grown, morphed and become much more comprehensive than it originally was.

St Andrew Youth Website Over The Years

I took over direction of the website in fall of 2009. We decided to combine the high school youth group website - called LIFE at the time - with the Confirmation website, to allow for some cross-exchange of information. Students and parents of one group could easily see what is going on with the other. At the time, I was a high school student myself, part of the Teen Leadership Team.

Since I've taken over the website, it has undergone an annual redesign. The first redesign was to modernize the website's design, and the second came this past year when the Youth Ministry underwent major changes and we combined Credo, Confirmation and EDGE websites all into a single entity.

The Nerdy Stuff

For those of you who were wondering, I do all of my HTML coding by hand, either in Notepad or using our internet host's online editor. If you were to look at my source code, you would find that I don't write "clean code" - my paragraphs don't have </p> tags on the end of them, for example. I write minimalist code, only closing tags when absolutely necessary. All of the code that I write is compatible with all major browsers, though.

If you're actually reading this section on the nerdy stuff, you probably already know, based on the .shtml extension of our pages, the website uses server side includes to provide the heading and schedule information on each page. This is significantly less crude than the version of the site where I decided iframes were the way to go.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me via the form on the contact page.

Subtle Facts About the Website

The color purple that I used during Advent is rgb(82,0,99) - the official color of my college (Northwestern University).

The Facebook, email, etc. images on the right-hand side of each page don't actually get brighter like they appear to do. They actually become less translucent, and the dark background color makes it appear that they light up.

If you click on Fr. Will's picture on the main page of the website, it will take you to the main St. Andrew website. I programmed it in for funsies one day.
